How to write a clean CV for free — a practical step-by-step
A CV is not a biography — it's a focused, one-page pitch. Here's a short guide to writing one that's readable, relevant, and ready to send, without paying for a builder or signing up for anything.
Step 1: pick a structure
Most modern CVs follow a chronological structure:
- Header — your name, role, and contact information.
- Summary — a 2–3 sentence snapshot of who you are.
- Experience — most recent first, with measurable impact.
- Education — degree, institution, year.
- Skills — short list, relevant to the role.
Step 2: write impact-focused bullets
Hiring managers skim. Each experience bullet should answer: what did you do, and what changed? Weak: "Responsible for customer support." Strong: "Handled 60 tickets/week, reducing average response time from 12h to 3h."
Step 3: keep it short
For most people under 10 years of experience, one page is ideal. Two pages maximum. Remove anything older than ~10 years unless it's uniquely relevant. Remove hobbies unless they genuinely differentiate you.
Step 4: choose a template
Use a template that's ATS-friendly (parseable by automated systems). Avoid heavy graphics, two-column layouts with unusual fonts, and decorative icons. Clean typography and generous spacing beat "creative" layouts for most roles.

Step 5: tailor for the role
Read the job posting. Note the 3–5 most emphasized skills. Make sure those appear in your summary and recent experience. Don't invent experience — reframe what you've done using the same vocabulary.
Step 6: proofread, then export
Read it aloud — typos hide in silent reading. Check your contact information is correct. Save as PDF (not .docx) to preserve layout across devices.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Photos — usually a negative in English-speaking markets.
- Personal pronouns — drop the "I" in bullets.
- Objective statements — replaced by summaries since ~2015.
- References available on request — implied and unnecessary.
- Dense paragraphs — hiring managers scan bullets, not prose.
